RAWALPINDI:

A man allegedly died in the custody of the Kallar Syedan police, prompting the suspension of the police station incharge and an inquiry being ordered into the alleged incident.

Sources said that while the alleged death in custody had taken place over the weekend, the incident gained traction through a steady outcry on social media.

Resultantly, authorities concerned belonging to Rawalpindi police took action and suspended the Pindori police station incharge.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations Wasim Riaz has been instructed to conduct an inquiry into the incident.

According to the police, the deceased Muhammad Afzal from Lahore was not a suspect in custody but was called to the police station for questioning on a citizen’s request.

Afzal was suffering from diabetes, heart disease and other medical ailments, they added.

Afzal was feeling unwell and was sent to a hospital where he died, said the police, who also claimed that the family of the deceased has declared that his chronic illnesses had been the cause of his death and they did not desire any further action.

The police further said that the hospital report did not indicate any torture or foul play either.
