Google and Samsung have partnered together to create a new platform called Health Connet, an API (application programming interface) which will give developers the correct set of tools required to sync user's health data between Android apps and devices.

As reported in The Android Developer's blog, the platform will help app developers to compile user heath data in an encrypted hub and store it on a user's device. According to Google, users will have full autonomy to decide what data they share and with which apps.

Users can choose one app to share their data with amongst various other apps that might be trying to track the same data.

Health Connect supports 50 data types in a number of different categories like activity, body measurements, nutrition, sleep and vitals.

Samsung’s executive vice president, TaeJong Jay Yang said, "We’re working alongside Google and other partners to realize the full benefits and potential of Health Connect. I’m excited to confirm that Samsung Health will also adopt Health Connect later this year. With users’ permission, this will enable app developers to take advantage of accurate and optimized data measured on Galaxy Watch for Samsung Health and use it in their apps as well.”

The Health Connect platform is currently in open beta and can be accessed by all Android developers. Google is also working with platforms like MyFitnessPal, Leap Fitness, and Withings for an early access program.

Google Fit and Fitbit will also have access to Health Connect, along with Google's new Pixel watch to be released later this year.
