‘Bad cop’ accused of running gambling den

Policeman in question is a suspended head constable who is blacklisted from HQ

KARACHI:

A few months ago, the police department conducted a purge against black sheep found involved in criminal activities, and patronising of criminals.

Following inquiries such 'bad cops' were suspended and sent to the concerned headquarters.

Among those officials was Khurram, the head constable of Gulberg police station. He is still suspended and black-listed from the police headquarters in Hassan Square.

After being suspended, he is sponsoring crimes in the Gulberg area, a policeman at the Gulberg Police Station said, requesting anonymity.

Residents of the area say that Khurram has got gambling dens reopened in Block 12 and Block 5 of Gulberg and is operating them under his patronage.

In return, he receives large sums of money weekly. Similarly, he is patronising drug dealers Amir Michael and Muhammad Ali in Musa Colony, who openly sell drugs in the area and manages to suppress any voice against them.

Residents of the area further said that SHO Gulberg was also informed about this several times, but he could not take any action against Khurram.

Residents have strongly appealed to DIG West Nasir Aftab and SSP Central Maroof Usman to eliminate the crime dens operating in the area and take stern action against the officers involved in their patronage.
