RAWALPINDI:

Several illegal furniture factories and godowns set up in residential areas adjacent to sensitive installations on Bandh Khanna Road have been declared a security risk. Therefore, an operation has been launched against them.

Sources have told The Express Tribune that illegal furniture factories and godowns were set up in alleged connivance with the municipal corporation staff.

The Illegal furniture factories have sprung up in Dok Kaku Shah, Islamnagar and Rawal Road Park. These furniture factories not only cause traffic jams throughout the day, but also give way to suspicious persons. Sources have further said that flammable substances are used in furniture factories without any precaution. Further, no proper arrangements are made to protect the dry wood in the warehouses from fire, they added.

The district administration and the municipal corporation have been informed several times to ensure the safety of sensitive installations and to eliminate illegal furniture factories in residential areas, but no action has been taken as yet.
