Rs1b set aside for women in current budget

Chairperson Women Parliamentary Caucus Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Assembly MPA Dr Sumera Shams has said that legislation for women including zero hunger, good health, quality of education, peace and justice, reduction of poverty, inequality and reduction of human rights violations was underway in the province.

She expressed these views while addressing a meeting organized by Omar Asghar Foundation and Shirkat Gah at a local hotel in Islamabad.

Deputy Speaker Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Assembly Mahmood Jan presided over the meeting.

Chairperson Women Parliamentary Caucus K-P Assembly MPA Dr Sumera Shams, Senior Vice Chairperson Rehana Ismail, Vice Chairperson Madiha Nisar, MPA Shagufta Malik, Asiya Khattak, Shahida Waheed, Zeenat BiBi , Rabia Basri, Ayesha Naeem, Sitara Afreen, Naeema Kishore, Sajida Hanif, Sobia Khan, Sumaya Bibi and other senior officials participated.

Dr Sumera Shams said that the K-P budget next year will be historic due to its women-specific nature.

“We are enacting legislation for women (zero hunger), good health, quality of education, peace and justice, reduction of poverty, inequality and reduction of human rights violations,” she said, adding that most of the legislation in this regard had already been completed.

She said that more funds would be provided in the budget to improve Darul Aman so that women survivors of gender based violence could have access to a safe haven, skills and could reintegrate into society.

She said that working women hostels would be set up in every district. The office of the Ombudsperson, Child Welfare and Protection Commission K-P will be further strengthened and they will be provided with the things and support they need.

On this occasion members of the Caucus said that they were also focusing on legislation for the minorities, adding that Darul Aamans were being established in the province for the welfare of women. They claimed that K-P is the only province in Pakistan where work has been done to curb trafficking of women.
