ADB to continue supporting Pakistan

Provides technical assistance for implementation of ongoing programmes

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is committed to supporting the implementation of structural reforms in Pakistan, said ADB Public Management, Financial Sector and Trade Division Director Tariq H Niazi.

In a meeting with Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Shaukat Tarin on Wednesday, he appreciated the efforts of the government aimed at improving social and economic sectors in the country.

He reviewed the progress on various ongoing projects being carried out in Pakistan and discussed the future schemes as well.

“The ADB is pursuing the capital market development programme, domestic resource mobilisation programme, social protection development programme and public-private partnership support programme,” Niazi highlighted.

He maintained that the bank was extending full technical support to Pakistan for the successful implementation of those programmes.

On the occasion, Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin underlined the government’s commitment to introducing reforms in various sectors to address the longstanding structural issues and to achieve sustainable/ inclusive growth.

He apprised the meeting that the government had taken steps to improve revenue collection through the broadening of tax base, capturing retail sales, single-window operations as well as track and trace system.

“Efforts are being made to complete the remaining prior actions under the capital market development programme within the set time frame,” he mentioned.

He appreciated the role of the ADB in extending support to Pakistan “during testing times”.
