Contrary to rumours spreading across social media, Bollywood superstars Aamir and Salman Khan have not pledged INR 30 million to Muskaan Khan, the burqa-clad student fighting for her right to wear the hijab in India. Claims were also made on Twitter that the Turkish government has awarded the student a large sum of money for her bravery, which were later deemed as false.
No announcement of a reward from the Turkish government was found on the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs website or social media, with Aamir and Salman having maintained their silence on the matter thus far as well. However, according to OPIndia, Muskan has been rewarded by Congress MLA Zeeshan Siddiqui, who paid her a visit and presented her with an iPhone and smartwatch.
The youngest Nobel Prize Laureate, Malala Yousafzai and Federal Minister Fawad Chaudhry along with popular hosts Fakhre Alam and Shafaat Ali have expressed disappointment over the viral video of the Muslim student being harassed by a right-wing Hindu group in India's southern Karnataka state.
In the said clip, a Burqa-clad Muskan can be seen being heckled by Hindu far-right goons while bravely making her way towards the varsity amid the chaos.
Sharing an article on how the state has banned the hijab in the university, Malala shared, "Refusing to let girls go to school in their hijabs is horrifying. Objectification of women persists — for wearing less or more. Indian leaders must stop the marginalisation of Muslim women."
