ISLAMABAD:

India’s efforts to hide the human rights violations in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) are failing miserably as the international community continues to speak up against the ongoing atrocities in the held territory.

Since August 2019, Kashmir has been under the worst form of lockdown, which has been condemned as inhumane and undemocratic by the international media. The Washington Post and The Guardian described it as an attempt to make Kashmir an Indian colony.

There are restrictions on mobility and lack of access to information, proper healthcare and education in the held valley. Journalists and human rights activists are particularly targeted and people are thrown in prisons as New Delhi continues to violate all legal norms.

Recently, some members of the British Parliament openly spoke against Indian state terrorism and backed the oppressed people of IIOJK. This was another evidence of international community’s rejection of India’s baseless claim of Kashmir being an internal matter of India.

It is worth noting here that the eye-opening report of EU DisInfoLab had exposed India’s global propaganda. Despite the country’s all-out efforts, the Kashmir issue came under discussion at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) twice.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has already spoken against military solutions to the lingering conflict, saying any confrontation between Pakistan and India would have devastating consequences for the region and the world.

Last year, 16 members of the European Parliament wrote a letter to the European high representative on the situation in IIOJK. Human Rights Watch and United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights have also documented the human rights violations in the held territory.

They called for a united voice against Indian atrocities in the occupied valley considering that EU is perceived as a champion of global human rights, fundamental freedom and governance.

The MPs said that EU needs to create conducive environment for the implementation of UN resolutions and the commitments made by the international community to the people of Kashmir. They called for using all resources to cooperate with Pakistan and India on the matter.
