KARACHI:

A new wave of westerly winds will enter Balochistan today (Tuesday) bringing a fresh spell of snow on mountains and rain in the plains, Chief Meteorologist Karachi Sardar Sarfaraz said.

The port city and southern districts of Sindh are likely to get only a mild whiff of the chill, which could bring down the temperature to nine degrees Celsius - enough to send Karachiites huddling in the safety of comforters.

However, the chill factor is expected with a time lapse. The rain and snow spell starts in northern Balochistan and southern K-P on Tuesday, but the cold wave was expected to hit Karachi on Saturday, January 22.

Under the new system, there is no possibility of rain in any district of southern Sindh including Karachi, however, Sarfraz said, after this system enters the country, breeze will stop blowing and the severity of the cold will ease keeping the minimum temperature to 18 to 20 degrees Celsius in Karachi.

According to the chief meteorologist, the cold wave in the city is expected to increase again from January 22. The new wave will keep the city cold until the end of January. He further said that due to the spread of the system to North Balochistan, it rained in Quetta, Pishin and other areas last night.

From tomorrow, this system will cause rain and snowfall in northern and central Balochistan. According to the Meteorological Department, the minimum temperature in the city on Monday was recorded at 14 degrees Celsius while the maximum was recorded at 26.5 degrees Celsius.

Due to fog in the morning, the visibility was reduced to 3km. Light fog is expected over the city on Tuesday.
