ISLAMABAD:

Federal Minister for Information Fawad Chaudhry on Thursday announced that the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has approved the import of 150,000 tonnes of fertiliser from China.

The minister made the announcement through his official Twitter handle and stated that the first shipment of 50,000 tonnes of fertiliser will arrive from China on February 10.

“600,000 tonnes of local fertiliser will also come into the market in January,” he added.

Fawad highlighted that despite the high prices of fertilisers in the global market, Pakistani farmers will not face a shortage of the commodity.

His announcement comes two days after the government directed the interior ministry to bring the persons involved in urea smuggling to justice and advised the farmers against panic buying, reassuring them that there was an ample amount of fertiliser in the country.

The decision came during a meeting of the federal cabinet on Monday, wherein the members of the cabinet voiced concerns about the deteriorating issue of the scarcity of urea fertiliser.

Minister for Industries and Production Khusro Bakhtiar informed the cabinet that due to the huge difference in domestic and global prices of urea, hoarders and dealers were interfering and trying to make a profit.
