The original ‘Superstar’ of Bollywood, Rajesh Khanna left a meaningful legacy behind him. On the occasion of his 79th birth anniversary, producer Nikhil Dwivedi announced a biopic titled Superstar – a term initially coined for him – to honour and celebrate the life and works of the legendary actor.
Based on Gautam Chintamani’s bestseller book, Dark Star: The Loneliness of Being Rajesh Khanna, the film is reportedly being directed by Farah Khan, as per ANI. While details surrounding the project are still being kept under wraps, Dwivedi expressed great interest in Khanna’s journey in Indian cinema and shared, “I've acquired the rights to Gautam Chintamani's book, Dark Star and I'm in talks with Farah Khan to make the film. That's all I can say for now. As and when any major development happens, I'll be happy to share because I'm really very excited about bringing Rajesh Khanna's story to the big screen.”
Farah Khan, who will reportedly direct this film, thinks of Superstar’s story to be an “exciting” one. "Yes I have read Gautam's book and it's very fascinating. We are in a conversation over this but I cannot comment more.”
Making his debut with Aakhri Khat in 1966, Khanna delivered 17 successive super hit films over the span of only three years. His list of successful films also included 15 of his consecutive solo super hits including Kati Patang, Bandhan, Anand, Haathi Mere Saathi, Amar Prem, Choti Bahu and many more. To honour his work in the entertainment industry, the superstar was also posthumously awarded India's third highest civilian honour Padma Bhushan in 2013, a year after his death.
Khanna struggled with cancer and lost the battle in July 2012. He has two daughters, Twinkle Khanna and Rinke Khanna with actor Dimple Kapadia.
The multi-award winner shares his birthday with his eldest daughter Twinkle. On his 79th birth anniversary, Twinkle shared a throwback picture on Instagram where she is seen giving her late dad a peck on the cheek. She captioned the post, “He always said I was the best present he could have ever received, as I tumbled feet first into the world on his birthday. A little star looking up at the biggest one in the galaxy. It’s our day together, now and forever."
