PHC disposes of treason case against Capt Safdar

PML-N leader was booked in February on charges of sedition for allegedly making 'anti-state' statements

The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Wednesday disposed of a treason case against Captain (retd) Mohammad Safdar, clearing him of the charges, Express News reported.

Safdar, who is the husband of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz and a leader of the party, was booked in February on the charges of sedition and inciting armed forces to mutiny after he made the alleged remarks during a presser held in the same month.

Commenting on the acquittal, Safdar said he had been visiting the court for the past three years. "If one wants to witness the justice being delivered, they should visit the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa court."

He thanked the court, saying, "It is this place where I was delivered justice."

The case against Safdar was booked under Pakistan Penal Code Section 121 (waging war against Pakistan), Section 121-A (conspiracy to wage war against Pakistan), Section 124-A (sedition), 131 (Mutiny or seducing soldier for mutiny), Section 153 (provocation to cause riot) and Section 505 (statement to cause public mischief).

According to police at the time of the registration of the case, the PML-N leader, through a presser, had tried to defame Pakistan and its institutions, spread chaos in the country's institutions and incite people against the same.

In October last year, he was granted an interim pre-arrest bail by the PHC and directed to submit two surety bonds of Rs100,000 each.
