The Lahore Wildlife Safari Park has allowed fishing from boats in a lake for visitors. Women and young people are among those who have started enjoying fishing in the seven-acre lake in the park. Lahore Safari Park Director Sheikh Zahid told The Express Tribune that he had accepted the proposal of the provincial secretary for forests and wildlife to facilitate fishing in the park.
Five fishing permits will be issued daily for a fee of Rs1,000. Those obtaining a permit will be allowed to catch two fish. However, if more fish are caught, the price will have to be paid according to the market rate. "We will try to issue fishing permits to families on a priority basis," the official said.
Mashaal, a teacher, said she had started fishing while visiting the park with a students’ trip from her school after finding out that the management had allowed visitors to catch fish in the lake. However, she had not been able to catch a fish. "It's a great move to entertain citizens," she said.
Badar Munir, a member of the Punjab Wildlife Board, while giving details about the permission for fishing, said the citizens would be provided international standard facilities.
Visitors will be able to do barbecue the fish caught by them. He said the fish in the river near Lahore had become extinct, so the step had been taken to benefit the citizens. Badar Munir said training of fishing would also be given to the visitors. The fisheries department will release fish in the lake as per requirement and will also take care of their food. Lahore Safari Park is the first wildlife park in Punjab where visitors have been given the opportunity to see wild animals as well as fish
