24 rural UCs to be added to RMC

The new system will be enforced from January 1

RAWALPINDI:

The municipality status of Rawalpindi is all set to be officially elevated to Metropolitan Municipal Corporation under the new local government system in Punjab.

A total of 24 union councils (UCs) in the outskirts of Rawalpindi are being included in the corporation, while the new population figure for a neighbourhood council will be 25,000 and the number of neighbourhood councils will be increased to 100.

Currently, there are 46 UCs under the corporation, which will number 70 once the 24 UCs of the rural areas will be added to the mix.

The city’s father of Rawalpindi will be called Lord Mayor and will be chosen through a direct public vote.

The tenure of the current local government representatives will end on December 31, while the new system will be enforced from January 1.

Senior Minister Mian Mehmoodur Rasheed, Law Minister Basharat Raja and Senator Aijaz Chaudhry have prepared recommendations for the new local government system in the province.
