The Sindh High Court (SHC) has sought a reply from the attorney general of Pakistan and others on a petition against the failure to control prices of daily commodities including milk, curd and sugar.
A bench, headed by Chief Justice Sindh High Court Justice Ahmed Ali Sheikh, heard the petition filed by Advocate Tariq Mansoor. The petitioner argued that the Hoarding and Black Marketing Act has been in existence since the time of Quaid-i-Azam.
“The Quaid-i-Azam enacted this law in 1948 to control prices, however, following his demise, this law was put on the backburner. This law has not been enforced for 70 years,” the petitioner contended and added that failure to comply with the law resulted in arbitrary prices of goods.
The counsel said that the people were suffering due to a fight between the two institutions. As long as these powers are vested in the commissioners, deputy commissioners and assistant commissioners, inflation will remain there.
This is not the job of the commissioners but of the Bureau of Supply and Prices. Special judges should be appointed regarding the prices of goods. These powers should be taken from the commissioners and given to the special judges. The special judge has been given the power to award sentence up to seven years.
Notification of appointment of DG Bureau of Supply and Prices was presented in the court. The public prosecutor argued that the Sindh government has appointed the said DG.
The court adjourned the hearing until December 9.

Also, Sindh High Court sought a response from all parties on Global Foundation’s petition against the charged parking mafia.
A two-judge bench, headed by Justice Zafar Ahmed Rajput,heard the petition. Petitioner Ahmed Dawood’s counsel argued that illegal parking fees and extra money were being collected at various places in the city.
“Extortion is being collected from the citizens in the name of parking fee while no agency was taking action against the extra charges.”
He said that with the connivance of the cops and traffic police, the parking mafia is taking over everywhere.
