KARACHI:

Syed Hussain Jaun Asghar Naqvi, commonly known as Jaun Elia, whose 19th death anniversary is being observed today (Monday), introduced a new dimension to Urdu literature with his unique style and soft accent.

Born on December 14, 1931 in Amroha, India, Jaun Elia, besides Urdu, also had command over English, Arabic and Persian languages. His first collection of poetry 'Shayad' was published in 1991 which was declared as the preface of Urdu literature.

Jaun Elia's Urdu prose and editorials are considered as a great asset specially for those who are doing research work for their higher education.

Jaun's poetry collections include 'Guman', 'Lekin', 'Goya' and 'Amur'. Most of the writings were well received among the masses. His collection of essays under the title 'Famud' is also noteworthy.

Due to his isolated perspective and exceptional academic ability, Jaun Elia held a special place among the literary circles. He was a unique poet of his kind. Literary poets believe that Jaun was alone in his unique poetry while he was one of the prominent people who promoted modern ghazal after the establishment of Pakistan. They call Jaun a man of the lineage of 'Meer' and 'Musafi'. Jaun Elia's poetry is an open rebellion against society and tradition.
