ECP gives deadline to Sindh govt over local body elections

The Sindh government has not yet provided the number of local councils

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has given a deadline to the Sindh government for holding local body elections in the province.

The ECP has directed the Sindh government to ensure all necessary preparations for local body elections are made by November 6.ECP has directed the District Election Commissioners to contact the Deputy Commissioners (DC) of the province immediately.

The Sindh government has not yet provided the number of local councils, the total number of contestable seats or the draft amendments to the ECP.

Meanwhile, the Sindh government has finally started the preliminary work for the local body elections. The Sindh Local Government Department has written an official letter to the DCs of all the provincial districts directing them to provide the current district maps to the ECP.

The letter states that the provided maps should identify urban and rural areas along with all local councils. The letter further instructs that the maps should be provided according to the latest census with correct demarcations of tehsils, circles, charges and administrative boundaries.
