LAHORE:

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif has said that Prime Minister Imran Khan should keep his word to commit suicide rather than approaching the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for bailout packages, questioning what was keeping the premier from doing so.

Addressing the party leaders of Multan Division via video link from London on Tuesday, Sharif lamented that the sanctity of the Constitution and parliament was always violated in the country.

He recalled that PM Imran had earlier asserted that he would rather prefer to commit suicide than approach the global money lender for financial assistance to run the country.

The meeting, held to organise the party at the union council level, was attended by PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz, General Secretary Ahsan Iqbal and Punjab President Rana Sanaullah.

Censuring the government over inflation and soaring costs of living under its rule, Sharif wondered who will challenge the government on the skyrocketing prices of essential commodities such as flour, sugar and medicines. “People of Pakistan are in dire misery,” he said, recalling PM Khan’s earlier words that inflation was symptomatic of corrupt rulers.

He said, “The people would not have been suffering if the elections were not rigged. We were the ones who delivered on our commitments and promises but unfortunately, accountability cases were used against us as tactics.”

Maryam, also addressing the meeting via video link, said that the PML-N has managed to bag victory despite extreme hardships, adding that “even today, they have to rig elections and steal votes to defeat us”.

“We must not fall prey to the contradictions of the narratives nor should we pay any attention to it,” she stressed.

“There have been whispers that they are not conspiring to steal the next elections as well as to form government in the Centre,” she said. “It will not be possible this time around as the PML-N’s watchword of ‘respect the vote’ had won hearts” of millions across the country.

“The next election will see the PML-N’s victory. We have to fight the election with our strength and unity,” she added.

On the occasion, PML-N Punjab president said, “The selector installed a puppet government.”

Asked whether there were any contacts with the establishment, he denied but said, “Though unplanned meetings, somewhere, sometimes do take place.”

He said that the PTI-led government had needlessly pushed the country into the Afghanistan quagmire, “even though they are not even invited to UN meeting on the region”.

A day earlier, the party leaders in an organisational meeting for Gujranwala Division, reiterated its demand for clean and transparent elections in the country, asserting that it was their inviolable democratic right.
