MULTAN:

South Punjab Housing Secretary Liaqat Ali Chatha on Monday said that the Housing, Urban Development and Public Health Engineering Department (HUD &PHED) will construct 100,000 toilets in 10 regions within a year.

“The female public health engineering staffers are carrying out a survey in this regard,” he revealed. Chatha said the survey of six districts of South Punjab had been conducted so far, which had shown that Rajanpur’s population faced the highest deficit in the number of toilets.

He said that a survey regarding the dearth of toilets in the remaining five districts of Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Rahim Yar Khan, Khanewal and Vehari was underway and likely to be completed by December.

The secretary highlighted that the World Bank is also funding another project under which 3,000 lavatories would be constructed in the province.

He maintained that lack of access to proper sanitation leads to many deaths around the globe.
