Reconstituted KWSB to have IT experts, KCCI, civil society members

Board members to vote on inclusion of city administrator

KARACHI:

The Sindh government will reconstitute the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) to include the mayor, water experts, legal experts, IT professionals and a member of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) besides representation from the education experts and field experts, it emerged on Thursday.

The proposal came under discussion during a meeting held under the chairmanship of Sindh Local Government (LG) Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah.

The held to review reforms and reconstitution of KWSB was attended by LG Secretary Engineer Syed Najam Ahmed Shah, KWSB Managing Director Asadullah Khan, KWSSIP Project Director Syed Salahuddin, NED University Vice Chancellor Sarosh Lodhi and other officers and board members.

Briefing the LG minister, the secretary said that the reorganisation of KWSB was meant to make it an independent, profitable and progressive body, so that the citizens of Karachi can get access to clean drinking water and a flawless sewerage system on a permanent basis.

Secretary Najam Shah told the meeting that relevant experts and IT professionals be included on the board. Therefore, in addition to the chairperson and vice chairperson, the governing body will consist of the LG secretary, planning and development secretary, finance secretary and the chief executive officer. Besides, the board will include water experts, legal experts, IT professionals, education experts and field experts as members. The LG secretary further said that special representation will also be given to the civil society and KCCI.

The LG minister said that the mayor of the city should also be on the board. Najam Shah while endorsing the proposal said the board members will decide on it by majority vote.

The decisions of the proposed board will be ratified by the Sindh government.
