Strava is now making its live location-sharing application for athletes, Beacon, available free of cost for everyone, reported The Verge. Previously, this feature was only available via subscription of $59.9 annually and $5 per month.
Strava is a tracking application for athletes which incorporates social networking features. Beacon sharing allows users to share their live location with up to three friends who can track their progress until they finish. When requested, they will receive a text message containing a URL that will open up in a browser and display your activity in real time. This feature works for all athletes, including bikers or runners who find themselves in a secluded area. This feature can be used by your friends as well to join you mid-course of your trail, and make it exciting.
The beacon feature has one drawback, that will not allow Apple watch and Garmin bike computers to share live location free of cost. This would be a paid subscribed feature for these users, because of the complex features of these devices. Beacon sharing is available for free only on smartphones.
The new feature to provide free beacon services to customers came from the updated user privacy options on the application. The new options now allow for more accurate and visible GPS tracking beyond one’s home, and features that allow users to hide their heart-rate and pace. The beacon feature being made available free of cost has been a quite a milestone for Strava in ensuring user safety for everyone.
