Man ‘kills lover, commits suicide’

At least 3,721 cases of violence against women were reported in Punjab in first six months of 2021

A man committed suicide after allegedly shooting dead his lover in Shalimar on Monday.

Reportedly, the victim identified as 45-year-old Mussarat Bibi, a mother of five, was divorced. After her divorce, she moved to Shalimar and was in a relationship with the suspect Muhammad Asghar.

Reportedly, the woman had cheated on Asghar with another man. On the day of the incident, the suspect shot at the victim and she suffered four bullet injuries. The victim died on the spot.

Afterwards, he shot himself dead. Police shifted the bodies to a morgue for autopsy and were investigating the matter further. A police officer shared that initial investigations suggested that it was an incident of honour killing. However, further investigations would help ascertain the facts.

Violence against women was rampant in Punjab. During the past six months of the ongoing year, at least 3,721 cases of violence against women were reported in Punjab.

At least 107 women had been killed for honour in the province during the same period.

A report revealed that the most number of cases of honour killing, 10, were reported in Rahim Yar Khan. Eight women were killed in Faisalabad, eight in Sargodha and seven in Gujranwala.
