Man wielding firearm arrested from outside Parliament House

Islamabad police claim suspect mentally unstable; say still checking his record for criminal activities

ISLAMABAD:

The Islamabad Police arrested on Monday a man in possession of a firearm roaming near the Parliament House.

The police identified the suspect as Malik Sohail. According to the police, the suspect had been roaming around the Parliament House with weapons for a long time and was ‘strategically’ arrested late out of fear of causing damage.

“A gun was recovered from him,” a police official said, adding that the man had been shifted to the Secretariat Police Station where an investigation was underway.

The police further revealed that the 45-year-old suspect was a resident of Chakri, and was apparently mentally unstable. However, the police said that they were checking his record for any previous criminal activities.

A video also went viral on social media wherein the suspect could be seen waving a pistol and dagger in the air whereas the police kept a keen eye on him without taking any action.

Last month, the Multan Police claimed to have arrested a suspect who allegedly opened fire at a tyre’s shop in broad daylight and recovered a weapon from his possession.

Shopkeeper Muhammad Asif alleged that the man identified as Nouman Nazar demanded ransom money from his brother named Sajid by telephone call.
