Indians call for boycott of Farhan Akhtar's 'Toofaan' for promoting interfaith marriages

Farhan Akhtar and Mrunal Thakur-starrer Toofaan, which has been making headlines lately, is now being called out for ‘promoting’ interfaith marriages because of which, Twitter users are asking for a boycott.

Starring Farhan as a boxer named Aziz Ali, the film showcases the journey of how he becomes a champion after years as a gangster in Dongri, reported Pinkvilla. His love interest, Dr Pooja Shah, is played by Thakur, motivates him to become a boxing champion.

While Toofan’s story revolves around Aziz’s boxing journey, his personal journey has triggered netizens. Amid the buzz related to the film, on Saturday, 'Boycott Toofaan' began to trend on social media.

Several users took to the micro-blogging site to share their thoughts on interfaith marriages and the relationship portrayed between Farhan and Mrunal’s characters. Many claimed “it goes against the cultural values” of the nation. A user wrote, "The movie sucks, the actor sucks and their ideology sucks and Bollywood sucks so I humbly request all my fellow citizens to please #BoycottToofaan." Another added, "Toofaan is against our culture." One user claimed, "Remember Farhan Akhtar was against CAA. It's our time. Iske Toofan ko andhi main uda do."

A user also shared that Bollywood was promoting ‘Love Jihad’ through the film. One more chimed in, “Remember Farhan Akhtar shared the distorted map excluding Kashmir from India, which is mostly used by Kashmiri separatists who do not consider Kashmir a part of India. Now, why should we Indians let him release his film in our country?”

Meanwhile, on Friday, Farhan shared a glimpse of his training montage for Toofaan. He turned heads with his transformation as he stepped into the shoes of a boxer for his film. In the video, he asserted that he did not train for a film only but became actually became a boxer.

Toofan is helmed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and produced by Excel Entertainment. It also stars Paresh Rawal, who essays the role of Farhan's coach and is all set to drop on July 16, 2021, on Amazon Prime Video.
