HYDERABAD:

A worker employed by a coal company who was beaten by the company's security guards succumbed to his injuries in a hospital in Hyderabad on Wednesday night.

The family of deceased Daudo Bheel staged a sit-in protest on Mithi-Islamkot road in Thar Coal Block II in Islamkot, Tharparkar district, on Thursday.

Bheel was among almost a dozen persons, who were suspected of stealing iron from the company. According to his family, he was kept in illegal detention for some days and was also subjected to torture which later claimed his life.

Bheel and others were later charged in an FIR and their custody was also handed over to the Islamkot Police. Pakistan Peoples Party Tharparkar chapter's President Senator Gianchand condemned the incident and demanded a judicial inquiry.

The senator, at a party meeting, warned that they will not allow such companies to work in Tharparkar which practice violence. He expressed solidarity with Bheel's family and assured them that the PPP will support them in getting justice.

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi also addressed the protesters through a phone call. "We condemn this cruelty," he said and asked the police and the district administration to help the affected family get justice.

The sit-in protest continued through the day. The local leaders of the PPP, the district administration and Tharparkar SSP Hassan Zardari negotiated with the protesters but they did not budge. The SSP said the police will arrest and charge the security guard who had tortured Bheel.
