The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) for the week ended June 24, 2021 registered an increase of 0.82% for the combined income group, going up from 147.92 points during the week ended June 17, 2021 to 149.14 points in the week under review.
The country has been experiencing a steady rise in prices since the announcement of federal budget for the next fiscal year 2021-22.
According to the provisional figures released by PBS, average prices of 21 essential commodities including potatoes, tomatoes, flour, eggs, garlic, onions, fresh milk, poultry, mutton, beef, ghee, LPG, basmati rice, soap, mustard oil, tea and flour rose in a selected basked of good. Prices of seven items including sugar and lentils declined. Meanwhile rates of 23 essential goods recorded no change.
During the week under review, prices of tomatoes went up by 14.56%, LPG 8.64%, chicken 11.43%, onions 8.38%, potatoes 3.37%, garlic 2.52%, vegetable 1kg ghee 1.53% and cooking oil 1.41%.However, prices of various lentils including moong declined by 3.79%, followed by masoor 0.26%, pulse gram (chickpeas) 0.71% and maash 0.45%. The price of sugar decreased 0.12%.
On a year-on-year basis, the inflation based on the SPI increased 15.29%. The SPI for the lowest income group increased 0.67% compared to the previous week. The index for the group stood at 160.25 points against 159.18 points in the previous week.
