KARACHI:

Aisamul Haq Qureshi and Rohan Bopanna conceded their doubles quarter-final match at the Montreal Masters to top-seeds Mike and Bob Bryan due to an injury to Bopanna.

The fifth-seed Indo-Pak pair was locked 3-3 in the opening set but opted out of the contest when Bopanna developed a problem in his left ankle. Aisam, however, confirmed that the injury will not affect the pair’s performance in the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati next week.

“Bopanna is much better than yesterday and the good news is that he hasn’t broken anything,” Aisam told The Express Tribune. “He can walk and he’ll be playing after a bit of a rest. It was a little scary at first but he’s recovering and we’ll be playing in Cincinnati from Wednesday.

“It was very disappointing to lose against the Bryan brothers again as we went to the court thinking that we will beat them in this match.”

Djokovic past Monfils

World number one Novak Djokovic lined up a semi-final clash against Jo-Wilfired Tsonga after defeating fifth-seed Gael Monfils 6-2, 6-1. Sixth-seed Mardy Fish got the better of Stanislas Warwinka 6-3, 6-7, 6-0 to also march into the last-four. He next faces Janko Tipsarevic who defeated Tomas Berdych 6-4, 6-4.

Serena reaches semis

Serena Williams reached the semi-finals as she rallied to defeat Lucie Safarova 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Williams next faces fourth-seed Victoria Azarenka, who breezed past Galina Voskoboeva with a 6-1, 6-2 win. Agencies
