Turns out Gal Gadot's portrayal of Amazonian Diana Prince in Wonder Woman was inspired by Diana Spencer, Princess of Wales.

While the resemblance of her character’s names and the late princess may just be a coincidence – the beacon of light in what is otherwise a darker take on superheroes – Gadot has revealed that while playing Wonder Woman, she took inspiration from Princess Diana.

According to Vanity Fair, this inspiration struck Gadot while the actress was watching a documentary about the princess's life. Gadot says that the Princess's compassion and care for other people made her realize that was the kind of Wonder Woman she wanted to be in the films.

As part of an inaugural pre-Oscars virtual event, Gal Gadot, confessed that her character Wonder Woman is partly inspired by the late Princess of Wales. "I remember watching a documentary about Princess Diana... and there was a part where they say that she was full of compassion and she always cared for the people," said Gadot during the Vanity Fair Cocktail Hour Live! event. "And that was like, ding, ding, ding, ding. That should be the Wonder Woman that we have."

The marriage between Princess Diana and Prince Charles lasted six years, and during that time period, she became the mother to Prince William and Prince Harry. Diana Spencer died in a tragic car crash in Paris in 1997 while being followed by paparazzi. The late princess was seen by many as a style icon, a symbol of women empowerment, and is remembered for her activism.

Whereas Gadot first portrayed Wonder Woman, whose real name is Diana Prince, in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. She then made her own with the film Wonder Woman and later appeared in Justice League. Her most recent outing as Diana Prince came in 2020's Wonder Woman 1984 as well as Zack's Snyder's Justice League.

During the interview with Vanity Fair, Gadot also confessed that in order to make Wonder Woman relatable she made sure to "show her vulnerabilities and heart,” just like the late princess would.
