KARACHI:

The wildlife department decided on Friday to lodge a case against the 'killers' of the wolf which was shot dead in a village located in Gaddap town of Malir district.

The incident took place on Tuesday in village Sehtani Mokhi some 12 kilometers from Super Highway. A probe into the incident of the killing of the animal has started.

"We have not found the body as yet," said Sindh Wildlife Department Conservator Javed Ahmed Mahar.

Speaking to The Express Tribune, Mahar said that the incident was reported as having taken place in a remote village. "Our team is visiting the villages and collecting evidence," he said, adding that a case will be registered against the persons involved in the killing.

Azeem Khan, SWD inspector, sharing details told The Express Tribune that he was not sure if the animal was a wolf.

"We have not found the body yet," he said.

Khan said that some of the villagers told the SWD team that the animal was like a dog. "I think it was a wolf," he said. He said that teams had been deployed in the villages and collecting evidence.

The local people in Gaddap believed that the wolf was attacking their goats for last three weeks. A video of the wolf's body surrounded by villagers went viral. It was also seen in the video that some of them were hitting the body, saying it killed the goats.

"It's a local specie and hardly ever attacks human beings," Mahar said. He said that those killing animals were unaware of the importance of their presence in the wild. "We have been requesting people not to kill the wildlife," he said.

Striped hyena

In another incident that occurred last Saturday, a striped hyena was killed in a village located in taluka Islamkot of Tharparkar district.

The striped hyena is predominantly a scavenger and according to wildlife conservators its diet is d medium and small sized mammals.

The local villagers killed the animal and its body went missing too. "No case has been lodged against anyone due to lack of evidences," said SWD official.
