The city police on Tuesday inaugurated Community Guides Programme, an old initiative with a new name, by appointing police-community guides at all the police stations of the provincial capital.
Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Ghulam Mahmood Dogar explained the purpose of the project was to provide citizens-centric policing to the visitors of police stations in a respectful and fear-free atmosphere.
The community guides will assist visitors and guide them from the gate of the police station till their meeting with relevant staff and officers for solutions to their problems, he added.
The initiative has not been introduced in Lahore. The then Lahore CCPO Amin Wains had introduced young officers of the rank of SI and ASI as admin officers in police stations. Their job was similar to the community guides. A separate room was allocated near the moharar and SHO room in the police station. However, the project had to be wrapped up as the then IGP Mushtaq Sukhera had introduced the project of Front Desk for public dealing in police stations and had deemed the admin officers project a parallel one in purpose to his initiative.
Six years back, Dogar has once again come up with the project with another name while the Front Desks were still functional in police stations.
DIG Investigation Shariq Jamal, DIG Operations Sajid Kiani, SSP Investigation Abdul Ghaffar Qaisarani, SSP Administration Waqar Shoaib Qureshi and other senior police officers were present on this occasion.
A large number of notables, citizens and all the appointed community guides attended the ceremony.
While addressing the participants, CCPO Lahore Ghulam Mahmood Dogar said, the launching of the community guides programme was the accomplishment of his another vision and dream to provide citizens-centric policing to the visitors of police stations in a respectful and fear-free atmosphere.
He said the appointment of community guides with the rank of Sub Inspectors and Assistant Sub Inspectors at Police stations is the very first step towards change in Thana Culture and promotion of Citizens Centric Policing.
The CCPO termed the community guides the representatives of the public in police stations. “The appointment of the police community guides had been made by the survey as well as secret balloting on the basis of their honesty, integrity, humanity and professionalism to serve the citizens with dedication and respect, understanding the importance and sensitivity of their fresh assignments.
