Chanderpaul leads Wets Indies fightback

Shivnarine Chanderpaul led West Indies’ revival as he remained unbeaten on 163 to take his team to 463 for four at lunch on day four in reply to South Africa’s first innings score of 543.

Chanderpaul, who brought up his 22nd century in Tests, hit 10 boundaries and a six as South Africa got a taste of their own medicine, taking only four wickets in 142 overs.

Brendan Nash and Chanderpaul added 220 runs for the fourth wicket as Nash too notched up a century to defy the South African attack. It took an inspired fielding performance from A B de Villiers as he ran out Nash after the left-hander brought up his second Test hundred in 14 Tests.

Narsingh Deonarine, who continued the West Indian innings after lunch on day three, was dismissed for 65 before Nash and Chanderpaul shared the monumental partnership. It was the first time in a while that West Indies batted with purpose as they first avoided the follow-on and then continued to march on towards the tourists’ total.

South African bowling looked toothless as Paul Harris bowled 45 overs for 144 runs without a wicket.

Morne Morkel finished with two for 93 as West Indies ended the session, trailing by only 80 runs with six wickets in hand and draw on the cards with five sessions to go.

They just have to play as a team, every one has to pull their own weight instead of depending on one or two individuals within the team to suddenly pull out their magic wand, concentrate on their game, take as much singles as possible instead of trying to hit the ball out of the park every time the ball is bowled, however, whenever fours and sixes presents itself hammer them to the boundary, believe in themselves,focus their attention on how there opponents play prior to matches and take every opportunity for a wicket whenever it presents itself. I believe the West Indies can do it. Rally round the West Indies now and forever.
