Mortal Kombat is set in a fictional universe that divides into 18 realms in total. The title as seen in the games as well refers to a tournament which one realm can conquer by defeating another and its warriors. Mortal Kombat is said to be R-Rated and is expected to lean heavily towards the gaming franchise’s gruesome roots.

The film stars Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Tadanobu Asano, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Chin Han, Joe Taslim, and Hiroyuki Sanada in major roles.

Its official synopsis reads, “In “Mortal Kombat MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld’s Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family’s safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with.”

Mortal Kombat is scheduled to be released on April 16, 2021.
