LAHORE:

A mega scam of depriving citizens of their savings on the pretext of lucrative business investment opportunities has been reported to the national anti-graft watchdog.

A large number of affected people staged a protest demonstration outside the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Complex at Thokar Niaz Beg on Monday against the alleged fraud of billions of rupees through promises of profit.

The protesters alleged that the suspect Aneesur Rehman, the CEO of a firm, had minted money from at least 20,000 citizens in last two years.

He had promised the victims to get them lucrative profit for their meagre investment. After collecting the money, he had fled.

The protesters had gathered from across the country, including Attock, Mardan, Rahim Yar Khan and Multan.

They claimed that two of the victims had died of heart attack due to the scam.

A protester said the accused had invested a lot in marketing through social media. An advertisement shared by the suspect read, “Do business to earn millions of rupees, our filling station and your investment, do you want to invest in diesel business?, you’ll get 50 paisa per litre as profit while sitting at home, investment only Rs350,000 and monthly profit over Rs43,000.”

The ads also made similar lucrative offers regarding the poultry business.

The protesters have filed complaints against the company before NAB that has started legal proceedings against the suspect.

In another case of fraud, an accountability court in Lahore on Monday sentenced an accused to seven years imprisonment and Rs100 million fine.
