Sindh changes exam duration, procedure for students amid pandemic

Exams duration changed to two hours instead of three, says Sindh Education Minister Saeed Ghani

The Sindh government announced on Saturday that it has changed the method and duration of annual examinations in schools and colleges of the province in view of the ongoing coronavirus epidemic.

A meeting of the Provincial Steering Committee was chaired by Sindh Education Minister Saeed Ghani during which policies regarding the resumption of teaching and examinations in educational institutions was discussed in detail.

Talking to media after the meeting, the provincial educational minister said that the examination procedure has been changed for the convenience of the students.

“Exam duration would be two hours instead of three,” he said. “The weightage of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) would be 50 per cent, long [subjective] questions would be 30 per cent and short questions would have a weightage of 20 per cent.”

Furthermore, Ghani said that examinations for primary classes, upto grade eight, would commence from June 7 whereas exams of grade nine an 10 would be conducted between July 1 to July 15. He added that examinations for grades 11 to 12 would start from July 28.

Ghani further said that results of examinations for grade nine to 10 would be released on September 15, while results of grade 11 and 12 would be released on October 15. No college would be allowed to admit students before October 15, he added.

“All boards of education will prepare examination results in 90 days." The provincial education minister maintained that strict SOPs would be followed during examinations and reiterated that students would not be promoted to the next grade without examinations this year.

He further said that at least 13,750 Covid-19 tests had been conducted of government colleges staff, out of which 200 people had been reported to be affected by the virus.

“Two colleges in Karachi are still closed due to coronavirus,” he said adding that all schools in Sindh would reopen on February 1.
