Police on Sunday registered a case against two persons in Khurrianwala for a fake marriage.
According to the police report, the daughter of Irshad Ahmed, a resident of 76RB Risalpur, stated in her complaint that the accused Ghafoor used to sell water in her neighborhood.
Ghafoor tricked the victim into marrying Liaquat Ali and arranged a fake marriage for the two.
The victim learnt that the marriage was fake after her request to see her nikahnama was denied and she was made to sign fake documents.
Liaquat allegedly kept the woman confined for eight months and also sexually assaulted her.
He threatened to kill her when she kept asking for her marriage certificate.
The victim claimed that Liaquat conspired with Ghafoor in arranging the fake marriage. Khurrianwala police registered a case under section 376 of Pakistan Penal Code and started searching for the accused.
Cases of fake marriage were not uncommon in the province.
On December 24 last year, a bride allegedly fled the groom's house along with cash, jewellery and expensive clothes after a fake marriage in Dijkot.
Abdul Jabbar had brought a marriage proposal for Imran, son of Niyamt Ali, a resident of village 95RB, of Atiq's daughter from Feroz Watwan.
Qurban and Shahida Parveen, were also involved in arranging the fake marriage.
The accused took Rs100,000 for buying the bride's clothes as well as two tolas of gold and 10 dresses.
The bride stayed with the groom for a night after
the wedding and left the next day.
It was later revealed that the accused had conducted a fake marriage and had not registered it with the local union council.
The accused fraudulently staged the marriage ceremony and then fled with the cash, jewellery and other belongings.
In another case of marriage fraud, Lahore police on October 20 last year arrested two men on charges of robbing a bride’s family of valuables after marrying her fraudulently.
The arrests were made after the Lahore High Court dismissed the bail applications of the suspects.
As the judge denied bail to the two accused, they tried to escape from the court premises but the investigation officer of the case called the police officials present in other courtrooms, who caught them.
Reportedly, the accused had formed a gang in Sargodha and they used to impersonate government officers.
They used to quarrel with the brides over petty issues within a month after marriage. The gang had reportedly been active in other districts also and had looted several families in Sargodha.
On August 30 last year, a man lodged a case of fraud after his bride was taken away under suspicious circumstances while they were on the way home after their wedding.
After the victim Muhammad Aslam was approached to get married, he gave the accused Zia Rs480,000 at different times for arranging the wedding.
Zia asked Aslam to bring the baraat for the marriage ceremony. When he went to Sajanpura with the wedding procession, the accused along with a woman demanded Rs38,000 more and then got him married. The accused sent the bride with him.
When their vehicle reached a petrol station near Islampura, the bride, Shazia, daughter of Jamal Din, resident of Farooqabad, asked the driver to stop as she had to go to the washroom. When she came out from the car, two armed motorcyclists took her away with them.
