KARACHI:

A water pipeline passing over Gulbahar underpass burst on Friday, as a result of which the underpass was inundated with water.

The underpass was closed for traffic soon after, while water continued to gush out from the ruptured pipeline.

According to Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) managing director (MD) Asadullah Khan, the ruptured pipeline has a diameter of 24 inches and it supplies water to Gulbahar and Nazimabad.

Until the pipeline is repaired, alternative pipelines will be used for channelling water to Nazimabad and Gulbahar, he said.

The KWSB MD also issued a notification stating that the supply of water to the pipeline had been suspended right after his department received a complaint, and that water flowing from the pipeline had filled it prior to the measure was taken.

The notification further stated that required machinery and KWSB teams were to be dispatched to the site and the pipeline would be soon repaired.

Water discharge continued from the pipeline until Saturday evening- when the last update was filed for this report- and it was estimated that thousands of gallons of water had been wasted by then.
