Khawaja vented his anger on social media site Twitter, saying India's visa department "need to sort their issues out".
"Refusing to let me travel to India as an Australian, because I wasn't born here. Wow," wrote the 24-year-old.
In an exchange with his Portuguese-born New South Wales team-mate Moises Henriques, Khawaja said it "wasn't that I wasn't born here but where I was, brother".
Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed that Khawaja's visa had been held up by officials at the Indian High Commission (embassy) but said they were confident of resolving the issue before the tournament.
"There has been a stoppage in the system at the Indian High Commission in Australia with Usman's application," CA spokesman Philip Pope told AFP.
"Cricket NSW and Cricket Australia are seeking to understand the detail behind the stoppage with our colleagues at the Indian High Commission."
Pope said the cricketing body had a long-standing relationship with the Indian mission and "we generally find that we resolve our issues mutually, so we'll work through this once we've understood the detail".
"I can't give you a timeline of when it will be resolved, but I'm confident given our history and our relationship that we will resolve this as soon as possible," he said.
Khawaja, the first Muslim to wear the baggy green for Australia and also a qualified pilot, is on the 20-man long list for the NSW Twenty20 side, of which 15 will ultimately be sent.
The promising young left-hander made his Test debut for Australia in the fifth match of the Ashes series in Sydney in January, signing with Derbyshire later that month for the English domestic season.

Today's news: He has been issued a visa! So, let us go on to other matters!
@Incredible: Just shows how obsessed you Indians are that you have to lawyas comment in a Pak paper.
We should be very careful with every Pakistan born people of different nationality.
Dawood Gilani (David headley) is a case in point. It's hard to trust foreigners of Pakistani origin.
Especially if these foreigners of Pakistani origin, happen to be from USA/Europe, be doubly careful.
This most likely seems like the official Indian reaction to Pakistan's arresting of an Indian terrorist spy in Chaman. http://tribune.com.pk/story/225174/crossed-over-indian-national-detained-at-chaman-checkpoint/
Looks like India cant digest the fact that its terrorists and nationals are being hunted like wild dogs in Pakistan. Poor Khawaja, who is an Australian citizen, had to pay the price for it. :)
Pakistanis keep crying about visa problems. But the moment visas are relaxed, we get things like the Mumbai attacks, the Red Fort attacks, the Parliament attacks and so on and so on.
For your information, a US national of Pakistani origin scouted out all the sites that were attacked in the Mumbai attacks. So India has to be extra careful to scrutinize the background of any Pak-origin people and see if they have any extremist tendencies and may be working for the terrorists. It's common sense.
It is Indian matter ,why are pakistanis angry about it. Franking speaking ,now countries are very strict about Pakistani citizens after 26/11 . Indian also faced problem recently due to Headly . When Headly was arrested ,no pakistanis showed sympathy for India,Then why they are reacting when India is trying to undo its mistake learnt from past ? In stead of arguing ,Pak people should try to preseve the little left respect for them in the world community.
India ka baap: Give me one neighbor of Pakistan that adores Pakistan and doesn't have any issues with it.
This is the nature of things everywhere my friend. All countries have minor or major issues with their neighboring/bordering countries. But let me not interrupt your tunnel vision perspective of India.
@MAD:
But he is an aussie with a rider(*)
@all Khawaja has been granted indian visa just a day after rejecting it...now what will this terrorist do...steal the Champions League T20 trophy??...lol
India is a hub of terror that has been exporting its terror machinery for the past many decades to countries such as Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh. Not to mention that Maldives and CHina also have their own issues with India. Give me one country in the neighborhood that actually adores India.
Most Indian society is also filled with ignorant extremists who live in constant denial and like to back up their terror-sponsoring hate-filled government policies. Shame on India
@BruteForce:
He doesnt need a US visa. Aussies get in visa free.
I think there must be a misunderstanding here. India has visa rule that if a person was born in Pakistan or of Pakistani origin, there are special checks and police corroboration before a visa is issued. This takes a little more time. I am sure that is what is happening here and not that his visa is being refused.
why are these crappy indis' there??
What a mature statement by Mr. khwaja.. Prejudice coming out even from an educated pilot. The statement from CA says they are working out on possible resolution... and hopefully it will be resolved. Comments from across the border shows clear bias when all India is doing is following a procedure. There has been change in Visa regulations after mumbai, because the main accused were born in Pakistan. India is right to change the regulations to safeguard else tomorrow you people will say what can pakistan do..shouldn't India be more prepared.
I hoped Mr. Khwaja should have waited for the issue being resolved between both immigration/ambassies. His statement shows his love for India although he carries Australian Passport, after all he was born in Pakistan, need i say anything more. :-)
Khawaja granted India visa

As I said earlier, unnecessarily it was blown up.
Now, all India basher can eat their words.
Its not your fault you were born in Pakistan, dude. You would also find it hard to get a visa to the US, if you try. Make sure your children are born outside Pakistan, maybe they will get all the freedom that is denied to you.
Again its not your fault. India is looking after her interests. Blame the Country of your birth for being the epicenter of Terror.
Bribe them. Indian and Pakistani officials create these hurdles to make some money. They are all corrupt..
its a small and good step in right direction. Wish it happens to Washim Aram. that moron keeps advising in cricke matches. India can't attack Pakistan because it is no USA at least it can strike where it hurts to these uncivilized society. well.. majority not all. At the same time it should have much better relation with Bangladesh and donate more to them
Chill guys..He is President or Prime Minister of pakistan or Australia. He can wait..and will eventually get his visa..
@parvati, cbguy and all indians. . why u indian guys are getting crazy with us and chinas relation with pakistan.. better look on ur dates with russia and israel.. cmon.. u r so big but u still look for big brothers.. and u blame us. . . thats make indias presence hideous on map...
@parvati
you should move ur from here. we had marriot blast, attack on sri lankan team and many many more tragedies. did we blame you? you just cannot protect ur own country then stop blamin on Pakistan. if muslims are terrorist then shah rukh khan is from lashker a tayiba salman khan from sipa sahaba and aamir khan from jamaat e islami?? lol. eat some moral fiber , , ,
India has every right to protect its borders. We know this guy is harmless, but the next Pakistani born may not be.
Yes, India should not take any chance by letting this guy in without scrutiny. Otherwise he might disturb peace and tranquil Indian society where milk and honey flows , there are no crimes, corruption, poverty, a perfect country and society if you will. They should be careful in letting a Pakistani born , Australian national team player because who knows what he is capable of with his bat.
@CB Guy: samjhota blast accuse is already in jail for so many years and potential hindu extremist including serving indian army officer col purohit is also in jail just because he was involved in an alleged conspiracy to incite communal voilence. what more you want from indian govt. its better then your govt which just arrest talibani and then release them.... look into ur self before unknowingly accusing india.
This issue has been arrised because of david colomon Headly aka Dawood Gilani and tahawoor rana. Indian government order complete investigation of all foreign nationals of pak origin. Issue will be sorted out after the complete investigation.
Happens both ways. Indians hold visas for Pakistanis and Pakistani born. Pakistan holds visas for Indian and Indian born. Problem is no body wants to visit Pakistan.
Good job. indian govt. is now taking right steps in the direction of internal security. You never know which Pakistan dissent person is terrorist or not there are many examples in past like those of Omar saeed,Tawah-ur-rana,Dawud gilani aka david headley. When india has seen precedents of cousin of Sahid Afridi being terrorist india cant take chances on its internal security.
Indian apologists are here!
This kind of loser attitude wouldn't take India anywhere.
@ Incredible: you are incredibly dumb, the amount of Pakistanis visiting india is a lot more then otherwise. your government is so insecure that it always chooses to close its eyes fromt eh real enemies of india, the extremist hindus. people who were behind samjhota express bombings, people who were behind the murder of hemant karkare and people who threatened sonia gandhi fiarly recently. If they are so dumb not to allow an Aussie a visa because of his place of birth, i can only feel pity for them.
India --- Potential But Mentally Sick Superpower
@Incredible: LOL .... come again ????
@Incredible: Your statements reeks of naivety
Usman, I find your surprise incredible. Nothing incredible about Incredible's view. Only a matter of time before Indian couples start blaming Pakistan in their divorce petitions also.
It's always Pakistan's fault until proven otherwise. So much so that all this blaming Pakistan in the Pakistan-obsessed Indian media is also done by ISI.
Incredible.. you are incredible... you blame this on pakistan too???
Indian also have Pakistanisation of India Phobia!!
Seems there is a delay in processing his visa, soon it will be cleared. But his tweets are unwarranted and showing his immaturity.
Rather petty of them, though maybe their embassy itself isn't that much to blame - probably the Interior Ministry and the whole philosophy that their set-up has ...
Usman Khawaja, do not blame the Indian Govt. Pakistanis are against any people to people contact betweent India and Pakistan. So India "listened" to the voice of Pakistanis and refused your visa. If you have any quealms about it, take this matter with your people.
