Sara Ali Khan is undoubtedly the GenNext star of Bollywood. She made a promising debut in 2018’s Kedarnath and has chosen her projects carefully since, mixing roles in the commercial entertainer Simmba with Imtiaz Ali’s romantic drama Love Aaj Kal 2.
With Coolie No 1, Khan enters the mad world of David Dhawan, which very few stars have fared well in. The remake of 1995 hit of the same name stars Varun Dhawan too and, judging by the trailer, aims at reloading the all-out, slapstick Govinda humour for his fans.
The 25-year-old Khan is looking forward to the film’s release, wherein she reprises the role originally played by her father’s sister-in-law Karisma Kapoor. But she realises that stepping into those shoes "not possible." Khan said, Karisma Kapoor is an iconic star. She redefines the 90s. I haven’t even attempted to step into her shoes. Of course, it is a remake and comparisons are inevitable but there is so much more focus on bringing something new. Everything is kind of tweaking to make it more today.”
Khan joked she was "zero-years-old" when the original film hit theatres. "Things have changed since 1995. I think, instead of aping or trying to copy Karisma, which is impossible to do, we have tried to bring freshness to the role,” she added. “I enjoyed working with Varun. It is that chemistry for me in the film, as opposed to trying to copy Karisma Kapoor, because that wouldn't be fun and wouldn't be possible."
This was Khan’s first time working with the Dhawans and she had a lot of fun. "Honestly, it was like a mela. I really hope that kind of fun and energy got translated on screen because that would be amazing," she concluded.
