‘Coolie No 1’ remake starring Varun Dhawan, Sarah Khan divides fans

Many cited the onscreen duo's 'overacting' as the reason behind the cringe worthy trailer

One would think that the Indian film industry must be done with remakes of the popular 90s films. However, that doesn't seem to be case at the moment. The trailer of the Varun Dhawan-Sara Ali Khan-starrer Coolie No 1 was revealed recently and the look of the film should make 90s kids nostalgic. One could hope, at least.

But over the three-minute trailer of the David Dhawan directorial, Paresh Rawal going gaga about how his daughter (Sara) has found the world's richest man, who is so wealthy that he can also buy the White House. Cut to Varun, who is shown mouthing the line - quite obnoxiously if we may add, "I am on a conference call with ATM - Ambani, Trump, Modi."

The trailer moves forward as Paresh finds the Judwaa star working at a railway station as a porter. The film is a remake of the 1995 original film of the same name that Dhawan made with Govinda and Karisma Kapoor. The famous song Husn Hai Suhana has been reworked as well.

Fans, however, aren't pleased. "Especially loved to see Varun Dhavan did work on his overacting to do more overacting," tweeted one user. "Trailer seems to be interesting," shared another user. "But at the same time, it gives flavour Govinda and Karishma-starrer Coolie No 1. Sara Ali Khan can’t match to Karishma for sure. Varun Dhawan is also okay but by watching the trailer, I can say Paresh Rawal stole the limelight."

The new film, also featuring ace comedians Jaaved Jaaferi, Rajpal Yadav and Johnny Lever, is the 45th directorial venture of David. "Sara and Varun had big shoes to fill in and they have done a remarkable job," the director told Hindustan Times.

“Varun said that he always loved the screenplay and the performances in the original film. That's one of the reasons this adaptation of the classic is so special to me. The preparation for this role was a great ride. As an actor, the humour play was a lot of fun to do. I had a wonderful experience working with Sara, who is extremely talented. We had an amazing time shooting for this film across exciting locations," he added.

The film is set to premiere globally on December 25, 2020, on Amazon Prime Video.
