KARACHI:

Covid-19 Infectious Diseases and Research Centre at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital has been made functional, announced Karachi commissioner Iftikhar Shallwani on Tuesday.

Addressing a ceremony at the 120-bed facility, the commissioner said that it had an isolation ward, high-dependency units and experienced doctors.

Speaking about the lockdown in the wake of an alarming surge in Covid-19 cases, Shallwani said restrictions may be extended to more areas and there was a likelihood of shopping malls being closed so that the spread of the coronavirus could be controlled.

Shallwani directed the hospital management to ensure that all machinery and other equipment at the Covid-19 facility was properly maintained and remained fully functional.
