Reducing trans fatty acids key to preventing diseases
Urgent steps need to be taken to reduce trans fatty acids in the food supply order to reduce the incidence of heart disease and reduce mortality risk from infectious diseases such as the novel coronavirus.
This was stressed by speakers during an advocacy seminar which was jointly co-hosted by the federal health ministry, the World Health Organization and health think-tank Heartfile to discuss regulatory actions and finalize a National Action Plan to reduce trans fatty acids (TFA) in the Pakistani diet. Special Advisor to Prime Minister (SAPM) on Social Protection Dr Sania Nishtar chaired the event.
Health Ministry’s Nutrition Director Dr Baseer Achakzai said that TFA elimination was a priority area for the government.
