Sources say season three was given, as the show was rumoured to have scored a two-year renewal after its strong debut

Netflix hit The Umbrella Academy has been renewed for a third season, according to Variety. The streamer has handed out a third-season renewal to the drama from Universal Content Productions and showrunner Steve Blackman. Production on the next batch of 10 episodes will begin in February in Toronto.

The star-studded cast of Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, David Castañeda, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Robert Sheehan, Aidan Gallagher, Justin H Min, Ritu Arya and Colm Feore will all return for season three of the series.

Sources say season three was a given, as the show was rumored to have scored a two-year renewal after its strong debut. Netflix, which does not release traditional viewership data, said 45 million member households worldwide watched at least 70% of one episode of the freshman season. Season two, which debuted July 31, topped Nielsen's weekly streaming charts for the week of Aug 3 to Aug 9, with US viewers watching more than 3 billion minutes of Umbrella Academy's first two seasons.

In terms of the show's future, creator Gerard Way has eight graphic novels planned for the source material and would like to see the Netflix take to follow the same plan. Way and Gabriel Bá co-exec produce the show. Blackman, who inked an overall deal with Netflix earlier this year, exec produces alongside Jeff F King, Mike Richardson, Keith Goldberg and Jesse McKeown.
