'Narcos: Mexico' renewed for a third season

Lead actor Diego Luna, however, will not be returning

Netflix's popular crime drama series, Narcos: Mexico has been renewed for a third season, reported Indian Express. However, fans of the show will not get to see lead actor Diego Luna who portrayed drug lord Felix Gallardo, this time.

During an interview with IndieWire in April this year, Luna said he was taking a break from the show after two years of “really intense” shoot. The show's second season ended with Gallardo's capture.

Also not returning is long time showrunner Eric Newman who had been associated with the Narcos franchise for five seasons. Series co-creator Carlos Bernard will take over his duties.

This season will examine the war that breaks out after Felix’s empire splinters. As newly independent cartels struggle to survive political upheaval and escalating violence, a new generation of Mexican kingpins emerge. The show was originally intended to be the fourth season of the original Narcos which focused on the rise of the cocaine business in Colombia under Escobar and his Medellin Cartel.

Speaking of the original, actor Wagner Moura, who played  Escobar in the first two seasons of Narcos, will direct two episodes of the upcoming season.

Moura, who made his directorial debut with 2019’s thriller drama Marighella, had revealed he will serve as one of the directors on the new season of Narcos: Mexico at the 50th edition of International Film Festival of India (IFFI) last November.
