ISLAMABAD:

To improve vigilance in the federal capital, the Islamabad Police has introduced the system of ‘street watchers’ (modelled on neighbourhood watch) in the City Zone of the city. After the implementation of the system, only one dacoity has been reported in the area over the past week. Islamabad Police Inspector General (IGP) Aamir Zulfiqar Khan had directed to launch the new system for effective patrolling measures and to involve the local community in policing affairs to combat crime. The system was implemented by Operations DIG Waqaruddin Syed. Street watchers are deputed in each street and sub-sectors. They assist the police in its efforts to curb crime, informing the police in case they notice any suspicious activity in their respective area and keeping a vigilant eye on security guards and domestic servants. Further, Whatsapp groups have been created to ensure effective coordination between policemen and community members.
