PESHAWAR:

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) lawmaker Nighat Orakzai on Monday submitted a motion seeking a ban on dowry in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Assembly. The motion stated that poverty is increasing in the country and an alarming number of poor women are living in developing countries such as Pakistan. The lawmaker said that parents endeavour to educate their daughters to make them self-reliant and heavy expenditures on their marriage in a time of high inflation was an uphill task. Orakzai pointed out that many women cannot get married as their parents couldn’t save enough money for the dowry demanded by the groom at the time of marriage. She called for the government to take practical steps to eradicate the menace of dowry in society and to provide relief to people.
