HYDERABAD:

Hardly 60 per cent of the construction of the southern sewage treatment plant in Hyderabad, which was scheduled for completion in 2010, had been completed so far. A meeting chaired by Hyderabad Commissioner Muhammad Abbass Baloch on Monday was told that the project’s cost had also spiralled up by 200 per cent. The commissioner directed the relevant officials of the Hyderabad Development Authority to submit the revised cost of the project to his office so that he could pursue the matter of its financing with the government. In the absence of adequate sewage treatment plants in Hyderabad, domestic as well as industrial waste has long been dumped in the Indus River and its canals without being treated.
