The Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) cybercrime wing has suspended one of its officials for acting as the unofficial spokesperson for the agency on the social media platform.

“Assistant Director Asif Iqbal was suspended and issued an explanation for maintaining a private Twitter account bearing CCW which stands for CyberCrime Wing. He was acting as the spokesman of the wing on his own accord without permission which is against disciplinary rules,” a statement posted by the wing’s spokesperson on Facebook reads.

A day earlier, FIA Director (cybercrime wing) Amir Farooqi had issued a notification and suspended the official, Muhammad Asif Iqbal, with immediate effect. Iqbal, having twitter handle @AsifIqbalccw, had posted a tweet in which he wrote details about the punishment of spreading fake news. “Preparation and dissemination of information about Interfaith, Sectarian or Racial Hatred on social Media is a crime U/s 11 of Cybercrime Act,” it read.

The tweet came days after an FIR was registered by FIA’s cyber crime wing against Meesha Shafi, model Iffat Omar and nine others for their alleged involvement in a smear campaign against singer-actor Ali Zafar.

Other than Shafi and Omar, Lena Ghani, Fareeha Ayub, Mahim Javed, Ali Gul Pir, Haseem Zaman Khan, Hamna Raza and Syed Faizan Raza have been nominated in the FIR.

According to reports, FIA’s cybercrime wing registered an FIR against the accused after a two-year investigation. The agency had provided the accused with more than three opportunities to defend themselves, but they failed to do so and are liable for action.

As per the FIR registered on April 19, 2018, Shafi had accused Zafar of sexual harassment on Twitter. In November 2018 Zafar had protested against the social media campaign against him to the FIA Cyber Crime Wing and lodged a complaint.

Zafar, in his application, argued that the allegations against him were made under a premeditated plan conspired by Shafi, her friend and her lawyer. Whereas,

numerous fake [social media] accounts were also created to run the ‘Me Too’ campaign against him.

The singer also provided details of various Twitter and Facebook accounts to the FIA in support of his claims.

Marshall Brodie | 3 weeks ago | Reply I lost everything within minutes and it all started with a text message. I always considered myself cautious with my online accounts. Two-factor authentication strong passwords and hardware wallets. I thought I was protected. But a single moment of carelessness was enough for everything to come crashing down. It started with a seemingly ordinary text message from my mobile provider. It said there had been unusual activity on my account and I should click a link to secure it. I clicked followed the instructions and thought nothing of it. Two hours later I had no reception. I couldn t make calls or receive texts and then I received an email someone was trying to reset my crypto exchange account. Panic set in. I tried to log in but it was too late. My SIM card was compromised. The hacker had convinced my phone provider to transfer my number to a new SIM card. After checking my phone they reset my exchange credentials using SMS-based two-factor authentication. Within minutes they looted over 822 000 in crypto savings I d accumulated over years. The wallet was completely emptied. And the worst part I realized this type of SIM swapping attack was becoming increasingly common. The phishing link I clicked was the setup. My carrier s support was slow and frustrating. Law enforcement told me recovery was unlikely. For weeks I felt helpless until someone referred me to ICC Reclaim Services. I was initially skeptical. But after an initial consultation they began a thorough forensic review of the transactions and tracked the stolen cryptocurrencies using blockchain analysis. They coordinated directly with law enforcement and the exchange s anti-fraud unit. It took a few weeks but they managed to recover a huge part of my lost funds and provided legal support for further recovery. I ve since switched to app-based authentication and increased my security tenfold. But the emotional and financial damage was real. Please don t think you re too smart to fall for this. It happens quickly and is devastating. Learn from my mistake Never trust links in text messages and never rely solely on your phone number to protect your account. If you fall victim to a scam services like ICC Reclaim can help you get some of your money back. Act quickly and seek help if you ve been scammed.
