Central Cotton Research Institute (CCRI) Multan Director Dr Zahid Mahmood on Monday reminded growers of the importance of harvesting cotton cautiously to get premium price of their yield. In a statement, he said the cotton picking process has begun and farmers must ensure that alien particles like plant parts, shards from polythene bags, plastic, jute and cigarette butts should not get mixed with cotton as it results in poor prices of the production. “Farmers should start picking after 10am to ensure that moisture remains within the permissible limits as excess moisture changes the colour of the cotton to yellow, which results in compromised quality of lint as well as fabric.” He advised growers to pick from the bottom of the plant first and move up. He also said that farmers should wait for at least 20 days after the first picking to pick the second time and both yields should be kept separately.
