Britain’s Queen Elizabeth has formally stripped Harvey Weinstein of his honourary award following his conviction for sexually assaulting a former production assistant and raping an actor.
“The Queen has directed that the appointment of Harvey Weinstein to be an Honorary Commander of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, dated 29 January 2004, shall be cancelled and annulled,” according to an official announcement in the London Gazette said.
Weinstein, 68, is serving a 23-year prison term in New York state following his February 24 conviction. He has appealed the conviction.
Earlier, Daily Mail shared that the fallen Hollywood mogul was reportedly set to lose his honorific Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) at the Honours Forfeiture Committee meeting on Friday for 'bringing the system into disrepute.'
Playwright Polly Creed rallied for Britain to make the essential move citing French President Emmanuel Macron removing Weinstein's Legion d'Honneur right after the first allegations made waves in 2017. Over time, more than 80 women including Hollywood A-Listers came forward to accuse Weinstein of sexual harassment, including Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow, Rose McGowan, etc.
The 68-year-old was awarded the royal honour back in 2004 for his services to the British film industry.
