Man attacks estranged wife with acid

Victim had refused to return from parents’ home

FAISALABAD:

A man reportedly threw acid on his wife after failing to convince her to return along with him from her parents’ home.

The acid attack left the woman severely injured and she was admitted to the Civil Hospital. Her husband threw acid on her after she refused to return to his home with him.

The police registered a case against the accused and launched a search operation to find him. The report was lodged by Ahmed Hassan, son of Tariq Mahmood, a resident of Al-Noor Garden. He stated that his sister Ayesha Tariq had married accused Abdul Rafi, son of Abid Qayyum, a resident of 112RB Mohalla Elahiabad, Sangla, Nankana district, four years ago.

The complainant stated that the accused had tortured his sister and kicked her out of his house over a domestic dispute seven months ago. She came to Faisalabad and was living with him.

He stated that Abdul Rafi, armed with a pistol, entered his house with two unidentified accomplices. He said the accused had a white cup in his hand threatened to kill her as soon as he arrived. He later threw the acid from the cup on his wife when she refused to accompany him to his home.

As a result, her eyes, nose, neck and shoulders were badly burnt and her eyes were almost lost. The accused fled the scene on a motorcycle after the attack. Madina Town police registered a case against three accused under section 336 of the Penal Code.

SHO Rai Aftab Wasim said raids were being carried out to arrest the accused. He said Abdul Rafi had beaten his wife and kicked her out of his house. When she refused to return with him at night, he threw acid on her.

Incidents of acid attack on women continue unabated in the district. On May 29, a young girl suffered burn injuries on her face and arm when her fiancé attacked her with acid in Jaranwala area. The victim, Maryam Atiq, was engaged to her cousin Kamran, a resident of Bahawalpur. The engagement was called off due to certain suspicions over about the character of Kamran. In a fit of rage, Kamran threw acid on his ex-fiancé when she stepped out of her home to throw garbage.

In April, Humera Bibi was attacked with acid by her husband Haroon and her in-laws in Chak No 241GB, Thikriwala.

In February, 22-year-old Amna’s in-laws threw acid on her over a domestic dispute in the area of Mansoorabad.
